My husband and I felt moved to adopt a family this year for Christmas.  I combed through multiple Craigslist posts on the community board before I arrive at the CL post to the left.

Feeling moved and determined to help this family I went to work.  At first I wasn't making much ground.  I took to Facebook and posted on my personal page as well as a local Buy/Sell/Trade group page.  I am still blow away at the amount of donations we received. Even the smallest of us can help.  Here is a photo of my 3yr. old son helping wrap the gift for the mother.  I also included in this post a photo of the collection for our 2013 Angel Family.  So cool how when given the opportunity to serve, my community really delivered. Seeing the good in people has made this a great Christmas.  I wanted to share this with you.  I hope if you are not in the true Christmas spirit yet this post can help.  If not, I bet the video below will do it. :)

If you are tech and Photoshop savvy here is a way to get your Christmas cards on the low.  I made the card below with this free iheartfaces free holiday card template I found on Pinterest and will be picking them up today at Walgreens.
I am getting 30 cards for $3.  Here's how:

1.)  Snap or Find on your PC Adorable Pic
2.) Search Pinterest for "free Christmas card template".  Find, Download, Open in Photoshop.
3.) Drag your Adorable Pic into the card template. Position behind the correct layer. Crop to 4x6 or 5x7.  Save as a Jpeg file.
4.)  Go to Walgreens Photo Department.  Order and pickup your prints today for 50% Off with code CYBERMONDAY.
(The 50% Off "CYBERMONDAY" code can be applied to all things photo including gifts and books!)

(Note: You are printing as you would any ol' 4x6 or 5x7 photo.  They will not have a back and they will be on regular photo paper as any regular print would be.  Not any different than doing the photo paper cards with Shutterfly, etc. Only cheaper and NO SHIPPING COST.)

If you're not picky about your cards this is a great way to be frugal, yet still have that personal touch of a photo card to let your loved ones know they are thought about!  This is a great deal even when the Cyber Monday deal has passed!

Sounds silly but for Christmas (or soon after) I would love a new pair of glasses. I'm over-due for my check-up and I know I'll need stronger lenses. I'd love new frames to put them in. I'm crushing on this pair I "virtually tried-on"at the Warby Parker site.  The frames are Edgeworth in Whiskey Tortoise.. What do you think??? Me???
(Oh and I am now accepting gift cards from www.warbyparker.com. Ha ha :P)

What a great quote to stumble across the day after Thanksgiving!  Thanksgiving can be hectic, rushed, and stressing which is not the intent of the day at all.  I charge you to read and contemplate this quote.  What if.... What if you were so busy yesterday and even today with all the shopping that you forgot to truly sit with yourself and just be thankful for all you have?  Good news!  Today is another day and it is never too late to give thanks to GOD.  Amen! I hope & pray you all have had a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving!

This is a great low cost, fun craft to do with your kids during the Fall.  They make adorable handmade decorations for Thanksgiving!  How much you help will depend on your child's age and skill level.  I had a dinner party with other Mommies and I pre-made the turkeys and just let the kids color the feathers.  My son who will be turning 4 in three months wanted to make his own at a later date. He was able to fold the paper plate in half.  Cut along the folded line while I held the paper plate for him.  Push the stapler down after I put it in place.  He then made his own face and colored the feathers.  So this would be a great craft for a play date with children of mixed ages as it can appeal to all skill levels.

You will need the following: Paper Plate, Empty Toilet Paper Roll or a Paper Towel Roll cut into smaller sizes, Scissors, a Stapler (glue or tape could work as well), and Colors and/or other Decorating Materials.  (Remember if doing this craft with little ones google eyes and other pieces that can be ripped off may not be the best to use due to choking hazards.)

Here is another cute Fall craft made with an empty paper roll that my Friend Amy just posted on Facebook.

Enjoy! Happy Thanksgiving!

At our wedding in Sept. 2005.
Note the Groom's Cake.
A dear friend of mine is a St. Louis Cardinals fan.  She thought I would be cheering for St. Louis in the World Series since I'm from Missouri.  Her conclusion was wrong. See I married a die-hard, superstitious, super fan of the Boston Red Sox.  My husband was born in Massachusetts and much of his family still lives in the surrounding areas of downtown Boston.  He made it quite clear that when I said "I do...for better or for worse" I was also making the same commitment to the Red Sox.  His groom's cake was a Red Sox hat for freakin' sakes.  So I informed her of the following:
My Facebook Profile Pic
supporting the Red Sox.

1. I may be from Missouri, but I'm not from St. Louis.  I'm from KC.  The only team I would be allowed to support aside from the Red Sox would be the KC Royals...and well, how we like to say in the South "Bless their hearts...". Bah ha ha

2.  I married into supporting the Red Sox till death do us part.  So unless I die or the Red Sox dissolve as a team...I will support them, for better or for worse.  (Thankfully this year it is FOR BETTER!)

Along with this conversation more smack talk commenced and a bet was made.  If her Cardinals won I would replace my Facebook profile picture, a selfie in a Red Sox hat, with a selfie in a Cardinals hat for a week.  If our Red Sox won she would change her Facebook cover photo for a week to the smack talk photo of my picking.  You can connect the dots on this now.  Here is the photo she now has to sport atop her Facebook page this week:
The photo I found and added the 2013 World Series Champions logo onto in Photoshop
which is currently my friend's FB cover photo.
What a good sport and a woman of her word! Its nice when friends can be civil and graceful in the face of DEFEAT. ;) Bah ha ha
Love you MW!

OUR LITTLE PUMPKIN, EMERSON,     IS TURNING ONE!!

I am knee deep in planning and prepping for our little girl's 1st birthday.  October has always been my favorite month.  I love all Fall Festivities and I look much better covered up in warmer clothing. Ha ha Bring on the sweaters, scarfs and boots!!! I digress...So I feel like it was a special treat for me that my little darling was born in October! Her birthday is going to be at a local farm and I am so excited.  Mommy may have taken advantage of the fact that she is still too little to say what she wants do to for her birthday.

As I am throwing myself into my usual party planning process it occurred to me that my friends have asked me how I plan such cute parties and that others may not have a system for doing so.  "I don't know how you had the time to do all of this!" is a comment I hear pretty much every time.  So here is my super simplistic approach to Party Planning.

My Love-Lee Party Planning System:

First Step - Decide on the theme, vibe or color scheme.  I resort to Google image and Pinterest searches for inspiration.

Second Step - I open up paint on my computer and I sketch out a rough draft of what I want the main cake, dessert, food or whatever table to look like.  For me everything else coordinates with that main focal point so that is what I nail down.

Third Step - I print off my sketch. I select to print it in 4x6 size so it leaves plenty of room for my notes.  You can also simply free hand a sketch.

Fourth Step - I'm visual, so I use the sketch to break down exactly what I have and what I will need to buy.  I have even noted where I think I will buy them.  This helps with having a plan for when and where you will make your buying trips.  This also gives you a better idea how far in advance you'll need to start shopping so you don't feel last minute anxiety.  I use to wait till a few days before and I ALWAYS under-estimated the amount of stuff to buy and also the number of stores I needed to make it to.

Online Buying can be very helpful. My advice is to get as many things per place as possible.  Most of the stores the items are going to be shipped together which means one shipping fee or the store will ship for free if you spend a certain amount.  So try to order bigger orders with the same seller/store.  You can also save on cost and the worry of marking each item off your list all week long. Try to find a place you really like that offers a rewards/points system for added saving. Just remember shipping can be costly.  You have to weigh convenience over savings.  I usually have no more than three shipments coming in and the rest I physically shop for to avoid shipping fees.  Amazon is a great place to find the items you are unsure if you will find in stores and that could cause you to "run around" and still end up empty handed.

The biggest part of online buying for a party is your time frame.  If you tend to do the majority of your shopping online I suggest starting to order your items the month before to avoid things not coming in, back order situations, etc.  Also make note that "ships in three days" does NOT mean you will get it in three days.  That means they will get the order together and boxed up and on a truck in three days.  So if it ships in three days and your party is in four days maybe you should rethink buying it online.  There a chance it won't make it or you will be calling them trying to expedite it and paying more for shipping than the item itself.  Be nice to yourself and don't cut it that close if you can avoid it.

Fifth Step - Extra Pages....I staple extra pages to the front "main table" sketch page and begin to build my party planner.

Projects or Other Tables, Etc. - This is where I like to break down each "project" I plan to tackle or other areas/tables at the party.  I do the same thing. I sketch it out and then label what I need.  Then I add these items to my front page of what to buy creating one master buying list.  If you don't want to sketch you can always print off a picture from online and use that.  This helps because when you sketch and label you will find you are forgetting something small like tape, etc.

Food - I will use some of my sketch pages and actually sketch out my food table and place what food is going where.  This gives me an idea of what food I want to serve and what serving dishes and serving utensils I'll need.  From there you can look at each dish and collect recipes you are going to use and make a grocery list.

Sixth Step - Look at that laundry list of things to buy.  Is there anything you can skimp on?  Narrow it down to must haves.  Is your planner more of a binder than a notepad?  Are there too many projects and made by hand items to complete?  Again, narrow it down to must haves...the things that make the most impact.  Then create a realistic budget and find coupons.

This process should give you an idea of what your whole party will look like and cost BEFORE you buy a single item...which makes for a budget, time, and sanity saving good time that will have your guests saying "I don't know how you had the time to do all of this!" This system may not work for anyone else but I thought I'd share just in case it does.

A high school acquaintance of mine, Jerilyn McDermed, recently posted on Facebook her reply to a September 19, 2013 Wall Street Journal article by Kevin Helliker titled "The Slowest Generation"calling out what he refers to as today's slowest generation. I also read his article and felt moved to share my thoughts with him. I sent him the email below. It by no means sets him straight like Jer did with her powerful and inspiring personal testimony. With her permission I am sharing it with you here. I encourage you to read his article first and then read her response below.

----------------------------------------------------------
Jer McDermed's response:

"Dear Mr. Helliker,

I recently had the privilege of stumbling upon your recent article titled 'The Slowest Generation' through a friend on Facebook. As I settled in to read the article, the phrase short-sighted and narrow-minded sprang to mind, perhaps with a sprinkling of the word elitist.

While I applaud your Bostonian pace and the hard work that you put in as a runner to place in your age group, rest assured that I too, will win my age group one day. Most likely when I am 85 and everybody else in my age group is sitting in the nursing home and playing bingo. You see, Mr. Helliker, I am part of this so-called 'Slowest Generation' that lacks competitive spirit. However, I am writing today to tell you that you are wrong. While it may seem that this slow generation lacks competition or doesn't want to put in the hours of training in order to run 8-9 minute miles, one must look past numbers and at the runners before making a declaration that they're just not competitive.

Case in point:

Meet Jerilyn. This is me in 2009. Every time that I wake up at 3:30 in the morning to go for a run and bust out what you may believe are mediocre miles (Usually 5 miles at about 14:50 pace; sometimes faster, sometimes slower), I am competing. Every time that I sign up for a race, I am signing up for a competition. Every time I toe up to the back of that pack, because I will never see a day where I can toe up to the blue line before the gun goes off, I'm still competing. Jerilyn? the old me? That's who I am competing with. Every minute of every day of every hour, I am competing with genetics, family history, a life long eating disorder, and her- the girl who weighed 350 pounds who couldn't so much as play with her children without getting short of breath. You know what? I'm winning.

The picture on the right is me now. That picture on the left is from November 17, 2012. It was after I had completed my very first marathon. Well, a marathon plus. I say that because I put in 28 miles after getting lost on the course. I got lost on the course because I was so incredibly slow (though meeting the required pace for the race, I was the only one doing it) that they left me and pushed me to the sidewalk. I stood at crosswalks, I waited for traffic, and I picked up an extra 1.8 miles along the way. My race bib is ripped because after they told me that my race was done at mile 14, I tried to rip the d-tag off the back of it so that my time would still reflect that I finished the race when I crossed the finish line. After using some unsavory language and continuing without the blessing of the race officials, I ended up stuffing the whole bib in my pocket until mile 18 when I discovered that there were still 50K runners behind me. For the last 8.2 miles of my marathon, I cried. I cried tears of joy, tears of disbelief. Here I was, 250+ pounds, behind every body else, and I was going to be a marathoner. I finished dead last in 7:28. If I could choose between wining the whole thing because running just comes naturally to me, or coming in dead last because every moment of it was a struggle, an internal competition with what my body thinks I should be- I would be dead last all over again. A million times over.

To date, I have completed more 5Ks than I can count, a handful of 10Ks, 2 sprint triathlons, 6 half marathons, and a full marathon. I am the president of a run club that I established during my marathon training that boasts approximately 100 active members and 475 members that follow the closed group on Facebook. I suffered a torn ACL in March and had a full ACL reconstruction done on April 9, 2013. It took me 5 weeks to get back to walking my first 5K and much to the chagrin of my doctor, I began training for a half marathon on July 8th. At a check up for my knee, my surgeon could not believe that I was only 5 months post op and his physicians assistant told me that I have done better in my recovery than most high school and college kids. I run my first half marathon next Saturday, September 28th, 5 and a half months after having my ACL repaired. If that isn't a competitive spirit, I'm not certain what that is.

I began running in 2009 and I can tell you that in 4 short years, I have gone from feeling as if I did not belong to feeling as if there's a movement towards something better. I see people that are like me. I see men, women, and children of all sizes toeing up to the back of that pack on a Saturday morning when they'd be sleeping in or consuming an unhealthy breakfast. I see them competing with those same inner demons that I do, and you know what? They are winning, Mr. Helliker.

We are a slow generation. But you know what? We have more grit, more dedication, and way more competitive spirit than the runners of the olden days have ever had. Our race is simply more important than your random Saturday morning triathlon because ours is the race of a lifetime.

With respect,

Jerilyn McDermed"

------------------------------------------------------------
Here is my email to the writer:

"Dear Mr. Helliker,

God forbid we let the un-natural born athletics believe that they can brush elbows with elite runners! Soon everyone will think they can get moving and what then?! Maybe a healthier society? Oh my, the horror!

I think you've forgotten it was your generation that raised the slowest generation. Maybe your parent's generation is shaking their finger at you for creating the issues we fight? Just a thought.

Every generation thinks the next is going in the crapper. Just sounds like the same quibble of "In my day, I walked 5 miles in the snow with no shoes..." heard from our grandparents with a new spin. Agreed "fun runs" are a trend of the now, however your article sounds like a case of crotchety old man syndrome.  I'd get that checked out before it colors all of your writing and makes you no longer relevant.

My Regards,
Sarah Lee of Raleigh, NC and member of Generation Slow"

-------------------------------------
UPDATE!!
Here is Mr. Helliker's response to my email:

Ms. Lee,

Thanks for writing. I’d guess that when an old-timer says something about “kids these days,” the joke pretty much always is on the old timer.

Sincerely,

Kevin Helliker

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special thanks to you Jer for allowing me to share this with my readers! You are truly a brave, strong and inspirational woman!

1. PlanetBox

A friend of mine shared these with me recently.  I don't really have a need for them now.  I don't take lunches to work as I am a SAHM.  I already have a ton of snack carrying options right now so I don't think I want to invest in the snack size one.  However, I do like the idea of "greener" options for when the kids start school and take their lunch.  I really like the portion control and love the magnets for the kids to personalize their own box.  Also the carry cases look pretty durable themselves.

2. Fun Runs

OK so even if you are not into the current marathon running fad many people have found a middle ground in "Fun Runs".  These are usually a 5K which is 3.1 miles and they throw in a wacky theme to help you forget that you are excising.  These are great excuses for adults to take a break from stresses and reality with their friends or co-workers.  Some involve costumes!  Quoting "Olivia" the pig from my kids cartoons "Whatever the question, Costumes are always a good answer." So far I have only attempted to run in the Color Vibe 5K where they throw color on you as you run.  I am anticipating an awesome girl's night with my old high school friends running in the Bad Prom 5k early this October.  Some have even used these fun runs or run/walks as fundraisers.  No matter the motivation I highly recommend jumping in and participating in this new trend no matter what your physical fitness level may be currently because it can only improve from getting moving.

Tip: If running ain't your normal tup of tea and you are looking for cheap running clothes that you don't mind getting trashed at these runs, check Wal-Mart. I got spandex shorts, running shorts to go over them, a new sports bra and fun tall running socks with neon accents very inexpensive for the Color Run. And they carry plus sizes!!! :)

Eight years ago today we stood on the Carolina coast and said I Do. Today we stand on the same coast as a family and We Still Do. Thank you for being the one that cuts my burdens in half and doubles every joy. For meaning the vows you said about good times, bad times, in sickness & in health. I've set you apart. Always remember there was nothing worth sharing...Like the love that let us share our name. Glory to God!!!

This morning the kids and I observed the 9/11 moment of silence with the news cast. Of course my quizative 3 year was ready with questions and why's. Here's our convo. Parents, how do/did you handle this talk with your kids?

Mason: Why we do this?
Me: We are quite to show respect and sadness.
Mason: Why?
Mr: Because on this day, years ago a bad man hurt Americans and the Heroes that were trying to help them in two very tall buildings called the World Trade Center.
Mason: Heroes like superheroes?
Me: No, real life heroes like firemen, policemen, and the ambulance doctors.
Madon: Why the bad man do that?
Me: No one knows why there are bad people or why bad things happen. But know this bad man is gone and we pray for God's protection.

He drew this picture and it is almost scary how accurate it is. He said it is of a "fire-hero" and the "world buildings".  He then tells me that he wants to take it to the firemen.  So before his AWANA class at church we stopped by the firehouse with donuts and Mason's picture. I am so proud of my little man.

Just when you are taking life too seriously... they do this! :) Love them!

Growing up my parents always rented.  I have never lived in a home that either my family or myself have actually owned.  I think when you grow up in a lower income setting home ownership means more than having a huge material possession.  It means, I've succeeded in doing something for myself (and children) that my parents weren't able to provide.  When my husband and I decided that our first home buying experience would be building it wasn't scary at all because my husband has built homes for a living.  He no longer does so but we found a fantastic neighborhood and he felt the quality and upgrades the builder offered where above par.

I was over the moon excited to build the home of my dreams.  Literally, a home of my own was only something dreams where made of until now.  The house we chose was amazing. It had every feature I had ever flagged in a magazine or pinned on Pinterest.  The neighborhood had a mature feel with mature gorgeous Carolina pines though it housed new construction.  It was a short walk from the small town's library, elementary school, and ball fields. Someone pinch me this dream come true is even better than the dream!

Flash forward....that dream was too good to be true. We signed a contract in March.  It's now September, the month we should have been closing on the house, and they just now cleared the lot.  There as been NO work done on the home.  We confirmed rumors that the builder is struggling and it's not looking good.  Homeowners that have already closed after a year of waiting for their homes are experiencing issues and cannot get the builder to fix them despite the 1 year warranty that comes with the homes.  Our dream home was becoming a nightmare and we decided to set emotions aside and do the smart thing and walk.  It sucks, it stings, and I'm very sad.

We are walking away not only from drywall and concrete...we are walking away from the picture I had in my head of where we would put the Christmas tree, who would get what bedroom, how to set-up the playroom, the tree we picked out on the lot to build our kids a treehouse.  Needless to say, at this point, I'm crushed.

Our lease is still ending soon so we need to switch gears and we have decided to look at pre-existing construction.  We are in the process of terminating the contract, etc.  Soon we will start viewing homes.  I really hope that I don't compare each home to what our "dream home" would have had and I can find that excitement for home ownership again.

So this is the ending of "Building of Our Love-Lee Home" and the beginning of "Searching for Our Love-Lee Home".

I am not one to follow hard and fast fashion rules or any for that matter such as the prohibition against wearing white after Labor Day.  However, certain styles simply do work best during the Summer months and look out of place if worn into September.  That being said, I do support any reason to throw a party.  Never have I ever, heard of throwing a white party for Labor Day BUT I love the idea!  Why not poke a little lady-like fun at such rules?  If I remember...I will totally be throwing one next year.  Here are fun ideas to get your creative juices flowing in case you feel like throwing a "White On Labor Day" soiree.
Or Forgo the Party and Just Have DRINKS
You can't go wrong with a drink that has the word "white" right in it's title like White Wine or upgrade that to a White Wine Margarita.   Want to send summer off right?  Why not one last frozen drink like a Coconut Banana Cooler?  This post "Labor Day White Party Drink Recipes" over at Holidays Central is packed full of yummy white drink recipes perfect for a white-out celebration.  Or you can always take the labor out of Labor Day and go for a ready-to-serve cocktail like a Skinnygirl® White Cranberry Cosmo.

1.  "Oh Sweet Lorraine"

"Oh Sweet Lorraine" is a song written by Fred Stobaugh, a 96 year old man, for his late wife.  He entered an online song contest put on by the music studio Green Shoe by sending in his entry via regular mail in a large manila envelope.  Mr. Stobaugh's song did not win the contest but did win over the heart of Green Shoe's Jacob Colgan.

"I started to read the lyrics and was so touched by the song and without even meeting Fred we thought, we're going to do something," Colgan said.

With Mr. Stobaugh's permission Green Shoe brought the lyrics scribbled in a heartfelt letter to life.  The video below tells the story by Fred Stobaugh himself along with Jacob Colgan of Green Shoe music studio.  So touching; a heart-warming, tear jerking tribute to a 73 year long marriage of love.

2.  Football Nails

The 2013 NFL regular season starts September 5th with a Thursday night game between the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos.  We love some football in this household and I love being festive.  In celebration of the return of football and more importantly football parties I am loving the idea of Football Nails.

Here is a cute tutorial from Jen over at Polish and Pearls
on how to Do It Yourself:

3.  Skinnygirl MOSCATO

I love to have a bottle of Moscato around for impromptu girlie time.  Why not just any wine?  Well, I have found that even those who don't typically care for wine still love a glass of a simply sweet Moscato.  It is sweet, fruity and delicate.  Best stated by Skinnygirl on their site, "You can take our Moscato wine anywhere, from a laid-back picnic to a formal affair. She’s elegant and classy, while still down-to-earth -- just how we like it!"  It helps that Skinnygirl Moscato is only 100 calories for a 5 oz glass.

So sip and gossip chat away! ;)

"Life is too short
& childhood too fleeting
to not get out the paint."
-Mom

Tip: Use a fitted sheet over your dinning table for instant arts&crafts station. It's fun to use fabric markers to decorate your fitted sheet to inspire your little artist(s).

This sheet was the hospital bed sheet from Mason's surgery.  The nurse gave us markers and we colored on the sheet to distract him before he was taken back to the OR. Every time we get it out we decorate more on it with fabric markers.  Can't wait to see what artistic touches Emerson will add to it when she's bigger.
I hope one day to fill up the whole entire sheet.

Who's Getting Excited for
Cooler Weather? ...This girl!

1.  Coffee Cozy
What's one more item to add to your bag or car clutter, especially when it is this cute?!?  Here's a way to be "green" and cute at the same time.  Forget those cardboard throw away sleeves to put on your coffee and re-use your own super adorable one.

Here is one I made from an old sock! That's right folks, double green points for a up-cycling and cutting down waste. Just cut the bottom foot section off and use the leg and cuff part (see instructional photo below).  I took some of the extra part and made it into a bow and sewed it on with a junk drawer button for an added handmade feel.

2.   Trench+Scarf+Boots
Fall isn't fall without a classic trench, designer scarf and fashionable boots.  Here are my crushes.  Now who's going to buy them for me? ;)

BURBERRY SHORT TECHNICAL COTTON TRENCH COAT

KENZO Spotted Lightning Bolt Print Scarf

Vintage 70's Brown Leather Lace Up Boots

Cold weather equals static hair. I have fine hair.  I have fine hair which I like to also color because I don't want to face the fact that my hair is more light brown than the blonde color it once was.  Those things don't go well together.  I know I need to use product to help my hair's health and keep it from being a static mess, but they always weight it down.  I can't afford to weigh down my already super flat flock. Then I found this stuff. It smells good and now that there is a "light" for fine light-colored hair. Ding, ding, ding...perfect. I use it all year round, but it really pulls its weight when the temperature go downwards.

What does it do:
• Detangles • Restores elasticity • Revitalizes hair

Fun Fact: Moroccan oil comes from Argan trees that only grow in Morocco, Africa. These trees have been treasured for years and they have even been worshiped long ago.

----------------------------------------------------------------
So do you get paid to recommend this stuff?
Nope. Not at all. I have never been approached to feature any of my Friday Fave products nor have I ever received any compensation/kick-back for doing so.
If I were doing a product review or getting paid I would tell you.

I have have a Starbucks cup to drink it in.  Whatever gets ya through right?! Ha ha  It says you can just drink chilled but I think it is better over ice for some reason.
(Your favorite Starbucks iced beverages have been thoughtfully crafted and freshly chilled for you to enjoy at home. Find them in the chilled section of your grocery store today.)
